Wolfgang Zankl

About the person

Wolfgang Zankl was, until 30.09.2024, an Associate Professor and Deputy Head of the Institute of Civil Law at the University of Vienna. From 01.10.2025, he will be a full Professor and Head of the Institute for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence at Sigmund Freud University Vienna | Berlin. He was Dean at the UFL University of Liechtenstein, Professor at the Institute of Civil Law at the University of Graz, and a lecturer at the University of Leipzig as well as at Quadriga University of Applied Sciences Berlin. In 2001, he founded the European Center for E-Commerce and Internet Law, a network for IT law with numerous partner companies and representations worldwide.

Zankl is the legal director of the MANZ KI-Lab, head of the MANZ Annual Conferences on AI and Internet Law, and the MANZ certificate program "Digital Legal Expert." He was also the International Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Law at Tianjin University and is the co-founder and managing director of the Data Trust Center. Additionally, Zankl is the chairman of the advisory board of the ky-center for social media law and has worked as an advisor, evaluator, and consultant for governments, law firms, and leading IT corporations.

He has authored and edited 20 books and approximately 350 other academic publications in the fields of civil law and digitalization law. Furthermore, he has given lectures and talks worldwide, including in Boston, Casablanca, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Moscow, Paris, Peking, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, and Zurich. Zankl has developed several internet services, including one of the first Austrian e-learning platforms and the legal crowd-intelligence platform www.checkmycase.com.

Zankl is also an active marathon runner, Arctic and Antarctic runner, triathlete, skipper, and motorcycle tour rider, and he advocates for the freedom of information and transactions.

Wolfgang Zankl war bis 30.09.2024 außerordentlicher Universitätsprofessor und stellvertretender Vorstand des Instituts für Zivilrecht der Universität Wien. Ab dem 01.10.2025 ist er Universitätsprofessor und Vorstand des Instituts für Digitalisierung und Künstliche Intelligenz der Sigmund Freud Universität Wien | Berlin. Er war Dekan der UFL-Universität Liechtenstein, Professor am Institut für Zivilrecht der Universität Graz und Lehrbeauftragter an der Universität Leipzig sowie der Quadriga Hochschule Berlin. 2001 gründete er das europäische Zentrum für E-Commerce und Internetrecht, ein Netzwerk für IT-Recht mit zahlreichen Partnerunternehmen und Repräsentanzen weltweit.

Zankl ist rechtswissenschaftlicher Leiter des MANZ KI-Labors, Leiter der MANZ-Jahrestagungen KI- und Internetrecht und des MANZ-Zertifikatslehrgangs Digital Legal Expert. Er war auch internationaler Direktor des Institute for Artificial Intelligence Law der Tianjin University und ist Mitgründer sowie Geschäftsführer des Data Trust Center. Zankl ist außerdem Beiratsvorsitzender des ky-center for social media law und hat als Gutachter, Studienbeauftragter und Berater für Regierungen, Rechtsanwaltskanzleien und führende IT-Konzerne gearbeitet.

Er hat im Bereich des Zivilrechts und Digitalisierungsrechts 20 Bücher und etwa 350 weitere Fachpublikationen verfasst und herausgegeben.
