Rony Alfandary

About the person

Dr. Rony Alfandary is a clinical social worker. He is a senior lecturer at the School of Social Work at the University of Haifa. He was the Director of the Post-Graduate programme of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy at Bar-Ilan University until 2022.

He is the Editor of the book section of the Society and Welfare periodical. Among his recent publications is Seeking Psychic Space:, Exile and Return: A Psychoanalytic Study of Lawrence Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet (2016), Postmemory, Psychoanalysis and Holocaust Ghosts (2020), Psychoanalytic and Cultural Aspects of Trauma and the Holocaust (2023) and Fundamentals of Psychodynamic Social Work Vol. 1 (2018) and Vol. 2 (2025). In addition, he has published two novel and collections of poetry in Hebrew Rony’s research interests are multi-disciplinary and include photography, hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, the relations between language, creativity and the sense of self and belonging, and the impact of the Holocaust upon 2nd and 3rd generations.

He is the Israeli delegate of the Israeli Association of Psychanalytical Psychotherapy (IAPP) at the Executive Committee of the World Council of Psychotherapy (WCP) and at the European Federation of Psychanalytical Psychotherapy (EFPP).

He is a founding member of the Israeli voluntary organization The Road to Recovery which helps hundreds of Palestinians children living in the West Bank and Gaza to receive medical care in Israeli hospitals.

Dr. Rony Alfandary ist klinischer Sozialarbeiter und Senior Lecturer an der School of Social Work der Universität Haifa. Bis 2022 war er Direktor des postgradualen Programms für psychoanalytische Psychotherapie an der Bar-Ilan-Universität. Zudem ist er Herausgeber der Buchrezensionen der Fachzeitschrift Society and Welfare. Darüber hinaus veröffentlichte er zwei Romane und mehrere Gedichtbände auf Hebräisch. Ronys Forschungsinteressen sind interdisziplinär und umfassen Fotografie, Hermeneutik, Psychoanalyse sowie die Beziehung zwischen Sprache, Kreativität und dem Selbst- und Zugehörigkeitsgefühl. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt ist die Wirkung des Holocaust auf die zweite und dritte Generation. Er ist Delegierter der Israeli Association of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy (IAPP) im Exekutivkomitee des World Council of Psychotherapy (WCP) sowie bei der European Federation of Psychoanalytical Psychotherapy (EFPP).

Zudem ist er Gründungsmitglied der israelischen Freiwilligenorganisation The Road to Recovery, die Hunderte palästinensische Kinder aus dem Westjordanland und Gaza dabei unterstützt, medizinische Versorgung in israelischen Krankenhäusern zu erhalten.
