Rainer Gross

About the person

Dr. Rainer Gross is an Austrian psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and psychotherapist based in private practice in Vienna. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1981. During his studies, he was actively involved in the critical psychiatry movement “Democratic Psychiatry Vienna.” He completed his training in psychiatry and neurology at LNK Gugging and pursued psychoanalytic training with the Vienna Psychoanalytic Society (WPV).

From 1983 to 1997, he worked at the Gugging Psychiatric Hospital, and from 1998 to 2015, he served as Head of the Department of Social Psychiatry at Hollabrunn General Hospital in Lower Austria. There, he helped establish the first psychiatric department at a general hospital in the region, based on a social-psychiatric and psychodynamic treatment model. Since 2016, he has been working exclusively in his private practice, offering psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and supervision. He also teaches at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Academy and lectures at the Sigmund Freud Private University in Vienna.

​Dr. Rainer Gross ist Psychiater, Psychoanalytiker und Psychotherapeut in freier Praxis in Wien. Nach seinem Medizinstudium an der Universität Wien und seiner Promotion 1981 engagierte er sich in der psychiatriekritischen Bewegung „Demokratische Psychiatrie Wien“. Er absolvierte eine Facharztausbildung für Psychiatrie und Neurologie an der LNK Gugging sowie eine psychoanalytische Ausbildung bei der Wiener Psychoanalytischen Vereinigung (WPV).

Von 1983 bis 1997 war er an der Landesnervenklinik Gugging tätig, anschließend bis 2015 als Primarius der Abteilung für Sozialpsychiatrie am LK Hollabrunn. Dort gestaltete er maßgeblich den Aufbau einer sozialpsychiatrisch und psychodynamisch ausgerichteten Abteilung. Seit 2016 arbeitet er ausschließlich in seiner Wiener Praxis und ist zudem als Lehrtherapeut an der Wiener Psychoanalytischen Akademie und als Lektor an der Sigmund Freud PrivatUniversität tätig.
