Kathrin Mörtl

About the person

Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Kathrin Mörtl is the head of the Institute for Qualitative Psychotherapy Research at the Faculty of Psychotherapy Science at Sigmund Freud University in Vienna. She is also a member of the Ethics Committee for Psychotherapy Science and Psychology (PTW & PSY) and is actively involved in psychoanalytic and psychodynamic research.

After studying psychology at the Alpen-Adria University in Klagenfurt, she completed her doctoral studies at the University Clinic for Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy in Ulm, focusing on qualitative psychotherapy research from the patient’s perspective. She then received a DFG-funded postdoctoral fellowship at York University in Toronto, where she specialized in the narrative analysis of psychotherapy processes. Alongside her research, she has lectured at Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt, the University of Ulm, York University, and Sigmund Freud University Vienna.

In addition to her academic career, Dr. Mörtl has a clinical specialization as a psychoanalyst and serves as the head of the Institute for Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Research at SFU. Her teaching focuses on psychosomatics, narrative interviews, grounded theory, content analysis, and psychoanalytic process research. With her interdisciplinary approach, she bridges clinical practice and scientific research, making significant contributions to the advancement of qualitative psychotherapy research.

Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Kathrin Mörtl ist Leiterin des Instituts für Qualitative Psychotherapieforschung an der Fakultät für Psychotherapiewissenschaft an der Sigmund Freud Universität in Wien. Darüber hinaus ist sie Mitglied der Ethikkommission für Psychotherapiewissenschaft und Psychologie (PTW & PSY) und engagiert sich in der psychoanalytischen und psychodynamischen Forschung.

Nach ihrem Psychologiestudium an der Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt promovierte sie an der Universitätsklinik für Psychosomatische Medizin und Psychotherapie in Ulm, wobei ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt auf der qualitativen Psychotherapieforschung aus Patient*innensicht lag. Anschließend erhielt sie ein DFG-finanziertes Post-Doc-Stipendium an der York University in Toronto, wo sie sich auf die narrative Analyse von Psychotherapieprozessen spezialisierte. Parallel zu ihrer Forschungstätigkeit war sie als Dozentin an der Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt, der Universität Ulm, der York University und der Sigmund Freud Universität Wien tätig.

Neben ihrer akademischen Laufbahn verfügt Dr. Mörtl über eine klinische Spezialisierung als Psychoanalytikerin und ist darüber hinaus als Leiterin des Instituts für Psychoanalytische und Psychodynamische Forschung an der SFU tätig. Ihre Lehrschwerpunkte umfassen Psychosomatik, Narrative Interviews, Grounded Theory, Inhaltsanalyse sowie die psychoanalytische Prozessforschung. Mit ihrem interdisziplinären Ansatz verbindet sie klinische Praxis mit wissenschaftlicher Forschung und trägt maßgeblich zur Weiterentwicklung der qualitativen Psychotherapieforschung bei.
